I got together with some experienced installers and asked them to submit their best tips and tricks. Some of these are in the regular Aquascape videos, and some are original. All are good ideas. They'll help you either avoid some common pitfall or they'll increase your success and enjoyment of the pond.
TIP: Make sure when you're planting the pond that you don't go too heavy around the skimmer intake. At first, it's okay, but as the plants fill-out and mature, they will impede the flow of water to the skimmer and reduce its efficiency at clearing leaves and other floating debris.
TIP: Cleaning the pond is an involved process but it's easier with the water level dropped. So if you want to get leaves out, drop the water level as far as you dare and it's much easier removing leaves from the pond bottom. If you think you're going to stir up lots of debris and mulm, remove the fish to safety first!
TIP: When you lay out the pond remember you do not need three uniform shelves. On the main viewing side leave out the shallows for plants bring the mid-depth right up to where you sit so you can feed the fish up close . This also gives the added benefit of more water volume in the pond.
