Before You Dig Your Pond
If I could, could we please spend a minute discussing a few things BEFORE you cut ground for the pond? I think these items might be helpful. Precautions, caveats, and important thoughts.
PondInstallers.com
One of the ways to get a pond "on par" with the one they built for me is to choose a certified installer. You should be aware, anyone can install and Aquascape pond. But the company holds their certified installers ACCOUNTABLE. Go certified!
Aquascapes "Hot Topics"
Maybe we should say "Heated" because these are the areas where people get "hot" philosophically...No system is perfect.

We bought a Hach brand hydrogen sulfide test kit. It turns out it's easy as pie to run. You collect a water sample in the jar supplied with the test. You put a paper test disc in the lid of the jar and put a real Alka Seltzer in the jar and screw on the lid. Next thing you know, you can unscrew the lid and examine the test disc for color changes consistent with the presence of Hydrogen Sulfide.
Click here: Hydrogen Sulfide is described in detail
There are some ponds which have hydrogen sulfide problems, but it's becoming more and more obvious that this is a problem in ponds which are flagrantly neglected*. It's not a problem restricted to Aquascape ponds. I recently had a hydrogen sulfide scare when my bead filter was left off for two days in the blazing sun. When I turned the filters back on, I discharged the water trapped in the filters to the waste line, thereby sparing them the hydrogen sulfide which had accumulated in the filters in the absence of flow, or oxygenated water.
* Aquascape has a regimen they recommend regarding regular cleanouts of the pond. If you adhere to this cleanout cycle, it is improbable that you will experience any problems with hydrogen sulfide.
With the possibilty yet untested regarding the presence of Hydrogen Sulfide in our Aquascape test pond, we proceeded to use the Hach kit to determine the Hydrogen Sulfide levels and found these to be ZERO.
We then entered the pond and stirred up the gravel on the bottom of the pond and poked our hands into the plant pockets to see if there were trapped gases there. None. We retested the hydrogen sulfide levels in the pond after disrupting these gravel beds and found ZERO hydrogen sulfide.

Here are some ways to accomplish or achieve a hydrogen sulfide problem in your pond:
- NEGLECT to clean out the pond according to the pond's maintenence schedule. The ponds I have encountered with noxious gas problems in them were usually more than THREE years without the overhaul cleanout.
- OVERFEED the fish. One pond I saw with a hydrogen sulfide / bacterial bloom kill was fed about seven times per day. When the pond was broken down for rehab, you could recover HANDSFUL of dark green and brown mulm from the gravel bed, and the pond was only 1 year old.
- Use gravel or sand over 2-3 inches deep. Hydrogen Sulfide can ONLY be produced in anaerobic pockets in the pond. This means the bacteria which product hydrogen sulfide have to hide from oxygen. This is all but impossible in 2-3 inches of gravel, especially with Koi in the pond because they handily root down through 2-3 inches of gravel looking for food.

The above is just because it's EASIER to tell you HOW hydrogen sulfide problems HAPPEN than to suggest ways to avoid them.
