Before You Dig Your Pond
If I could, could we please spend a minute discussing a few things BEFORE you cut ground for the pond? I think these items might be helpful. Precautions, caveats, and important thoughts.
PondInstallers.com
One of the ways to get a pond "on par" with the one they built for me is to choose a certified installer. You should be aware, anyone can install and Aquascape pond. But the company holds their certified installers ACCOUNTABLE. Go certified!
Aquascapes "Hot Topics"
Maybe we should say "Heated" because these are the areas where people get "hot" philosophically...No system is perfect.

Can Aquascapes go "Aquacultural?
One of the hottest topics right now about the Aquascapes system is the question of whether the system can be made to function well on the "aquacultural level" for the koi keepers. The answer is yes. A big yes.
 |
At left we see the BioFalls Grande. This is the granddaddy of them all at ADI. You could fit some folks in there, and more importantly, you can fit media in there. Now, it might not be as easy to clean as a bead filter, but that's not the point. For this unit, which handsomely feeds a waterfall, burial is part of it's installation so it's out of sight. |
Filtration, and the ease of care, relates to the capacity of the filter for media on which beneficial bacteria grow to reduce nitrogen in the water. The larger the filter, and the more efficient the water flow THROUGH that filter, the more beneficial bacteria can be grown on the media in the filter.
The typical AS installation has a smaller BioFalls. This limits the size and number of fish which can be carried successfully in the pond. Some installers of the ADI system do not even know that larger Skimmers and BioFalls are available. Installers should know that the Aquascapes system is scalable with units like the above. Education will be axial to success with this. They should be instructed to ask the home owner whether they would like to focus on water gardening, or on fish. The two interests are not mutually exclusive but the fish-interested hobbyist will need to choose a larger skimmer and biofalls than someone who just wants plants.
The possibility exists that this filter will be one of those tested at KoiLab and on the campus of KoiUniversity. One of the things which will be evaluated is how the media supplied functions in this, and eventually whether or not modifications are needed to carry twenty, thirty, or even fifty pounds of fish mass.
