Getting a good installation is no guaranteed deal. It would be great if one could give you some assurance that you will be lucky and find a reliable installer on your first call.
You could hire some smooth-talking kid who takes out all your utilities in one cut, and leaves you with expenses but no functional pond. You could hire a fellow who can mysteriously "see" level and doesn't need a transit. (The transit level is pictured, it's the tripod thing-a-ma-jig in the foreground) A transit is a good idea so the pond ledges are level and hold water attractively. They're not cheap, and so only established installers will have access.
I think a person who wanted a good installation would have to be very wary, and very careful. Due diligence would include a check of the installers references, and then pictures of the installations the installer has done. Call all references. Ask probing questions, the most important two:
- 1) After the installation, was there anything you immediately discovered which you would change?
- 2) Despite what a good job they might have done on the installation, how was this installers' followup afterwards?
Finally, go and exhaust all references and articles at PondInstallers.com
In particular, check out Motel's Top Ten Questions for a prospective installer.
There is a listing of certified and uncertified installers organized by the state in which they work. There are other articles which help you determine who to call and how to talk with them.
